Once customers have booked their bin at www.bookabin.co.nz we often receive emails or Live Chat enquires about where their waste will go once it is collected.
So….what is happening to tidy up our environment?
The Waste Minimisation Act 2008 encourages a reduction in the amount of waste we generate and dispose of in New Zealand and aims to lessen the environmental harm of waste.
What is proposed?
- Putting a levy on all waste disposed of in landfills generating funding to help local government, communities and businesses reduce the amount of waste
- Helping, and when necessary, making producers, brand owners, importers, retailers, consumers and other parties take responsibility for the environmental effects from their products at end-of-life – from ‘cradle-to-grave’
- Allowing for regulations to be made and making it mandatory for territorial authorities and others (for example, landfill operators) to report on waste therefore improving information on waste minimisation
- Clarification of the roles and responsibilities of territorial authorities with respect to waste minimisation
- Introduction of a new Board to give independent advice to the Minister for the Environment on waste minimisation issues
Through this reduction we should also see benefit to our economy by encouraging better use of materials throughout the product life cycle, and the promotion of domestic reprocessing of recovered materials, which will provide more employment.

Well according to my old mate, Jim, it will be raining ALL WEEKEND. Terrible timing as I am sure more Kiwis had their heart set on a BBQ with friends this long weekend. As for camping in the Coromandel, this idea possibly won’t fly either.
If you have booked a skip bin or are on the market to get one for this weekend, just a heads up:
- General Waste is typically anything involved with a “general cleanup around the house and section” that is neither liquid nor of a hazardous nature
- Use a Cleanfill / Hardfill skip bin, if you have any of the following: Concrete, soil, sand, clay, rocks, rubble, bricks, sand, asphalt, ceramic tiles
- Use a Green Waste skip bin, if you have any of the following: Grass, leaves, tree trimmings, small branches and other organic materials
Thank you for all the support and feedback over the last couple of years!

Monday October 27th 2008 (It has been four months since the last public holiday!)
What is it? - A day to recognize the contribution to society of all the working people. In 1840 a carpenter named Samuel Parnell refused to work for more than 8 hours a day. He believed a person should work 8 hours have 8 hours for sleep and 8 hours of recreation. Many people agreed with him, so 50 years later on 28 October 1890 Samuel lead a parade through the streets to celebrate the first Labour Day in NZ. This day became law in 1899 and we still celebrate it today on the forth Monday each October.
What shall we do? - Most of us celebrate the start of warmer weather and attend events around the country. Auckland has Tradies Day at Ellerslie Race Course; Taihape holds its annual Gumboot Day; Herons Flight Vineyard in Matakana hosts Sundown; and Fat Freddies Drop performs at The Civic in Christchurch.
It is the “unofficial” start of Summer!
If you are not travelling away and have decided to get started cleaning up around the house so its looking good for BBQ season, get in quick to book your skip bin. We have suppliers nationwide with a variety of skip sizes and waste types. Remember the early bird catches the first worm!

Well it certainly has not been the best week in weather. It is safe to say that NO ONE has been having a ‘Good Hair Day’ thanks to the intense winds and constant rain. But rest assured, this should ‘blow over’ (haha) shortly leaving us with some stunning blue skies and a skip full worth of garden work! These wild winds have bought down a couple of the old greenies outside and with the combination of rain it has ensured nothing on ground is solid. Does this sound like a problem your having?
There really is only so many times you can make that old puzzle or press ‘Deal’ on that Solitaire game, so why not get into it before you have the neighbours at your front door complaining about hedges!
Just a heads up, if you are on the market looking for a skip bin hire, please be aware of our waste types:
General Waste Bin - This bin is for all the renovators out there or families who know its time to say goodbye to the years of collected junk. A General Waste Bin is not suitable for ANY electronic equipment, mattresses, old tyres or asbestos. You may only dispose of general household waste that is not heavy nor of a hazardous nature (including liquids). For more information on hazardous waste, click here. This bin has a weight limit. You can not mix heavy waste in this bin which will force you to exceed your weight allowance of 150kg/cubic metre. NB: What you put in your skip generally goes to landfill, so only put solid waste in it – dry and non-hazardous materials. Drain all fluid out of non-recyclable items and clean them before putting them in the skip, to prevent leaks.
Cleanfill/Hardfill Bin – This is the big boy of the bin types. You would be after this bin type if you have any bricks, concrete, soil or tiles to dispose of. Please be aware that by selecting this bin type you CAN NOT dispose of any other waste type (such as general rubbish).
Green/Garden Bin – This is your bin match should you have any garden/organic waste to dispose of. Only garden trimmings, trees, leaves and plants can be placed in this bin. You CAN NOT dispose of any other waste type in this bin (such as general rubbish or heavy waste). This bin also has a weight limit. By disposing of soil alongside your garden trimmings you WILL exceed the weight allowance which will incur hefty excess weight fees.
Please be tidy Kiwis! Try not mix too many waste types into one bin as this will need to be sorted into recyclables and items which will be placed on a landfill. We all want to reduce the amount of waste that is ‘dumped’ so let us work together to make this a better place!
