Well done to Waveney Warth & Matthew Luxon who decided to try and avoid contributing to the growing problem of increasing waste, by setting themselves a challenge of living for a year without sending anything to landfill.
Follow their experiences recorded in their blog, they have even got an online store where you can purchase all things eco friendly (loving the bamboo toothbrushes!)

January 2010… another Christmas and New Year have rolled around again, it all seems to come upon us in a rush and before we know it, the holidays are over and its back into that same old daily grind!
What better way to start a new year than to de-clutter your house?
Start off the New Year as you mean to go on, by booking a bin online at www.bookabin.co.nz
Once you have the bin onsite it is amazing how motivated you will get, throwing away stuff you no longer use or require.
A general waste bin is what you will need for most of the clutter around your home. You can also dispose of any green waste also in a General bin but please No heavy waste (bricks, dirt or concrete).
Tip: Get a timer and set it for 20 minutes as you move through rooms – it is amazing how much you can accomplish in 20 minutes.

Well it certainly has not been the best week in weather. It is safe to say that NO ONE has been having a ‘Good Hair Day’ thanks to the intense winds and constant rain. But rest assured, this should ‘blow over’ (haha) shortly leaving us with some stunning blue skies and a skip full worth of garden work! These wild winds have bought down a couple of the old greenies outside and with the combination of rain it has ensured nothing on ground is solid. Does this sound like a problem your having?
There really is only so many times you can make that old puzzle or press ‘Deal’ on that Solitaire game, so why not get into it before you have the neighbours at your front door complaining about hedges!
Just a heads up, if you are on the market looking for a skip bin hire, please be aware of our waste types:
General Waste Bin - This bin is for all the renovators out there or families who know its time to say goodbye to the years of collected junk. A General Waste Bin is not suitable for ANY electronic equipment, mattresses, old tyres or asbestos. You may only dispose of general household waste that is not heavy nor of a hazardous nature (including liquids). For more information on hazardous waste, click here. This bin has a weight limit. You can not mix heavy waste in this bin which will force you to exceed your weight allowance of 150kg/cubic metre. NB: What you put in your skip generally goes to landfill, so only put solid waste in it – dry and non-hazardous materials. Drain all fluid out of non-recyclable items and clean them before putting them in the skip, to prevent leaks.
Cleanfill/Hardfill Bin – This is the big boy of the bin types. You would be after this bin type if you have any bricks, concrete, soil or tiles to dispose of. Please be aware that by selecting this bin type you CAN NOT dispose of any other waste type (such as general rubbish).
Green/Garden Bin – This is your bin match should you have any garden/organic waste to dispose of. Only garden trimmings, trees, leaves and plants can be placed in this bin. You CAN NOT dispose of any other waste type in this bin (such as general rubbish or heavy waste). This bin also has a weight limit. By disposing of soil alongside your garden trimmings you WILL exceed the weight allowance which will incur hefty excess weight fees.
Please be tidy Kiwis! Try not mix too many waste types into one bin as this will need to be sorted into recyclables and items which will be placed on a landfill. We all want to reduce the amount of waste that is ‘dumped’ so let us work together to make this a better place!

New Zealand is not just showing off their skills in the 2008 Olympics, we are also one of the most techno savvy countries showing great confidence in online ordering. For this we are proud, we have shown the world that dynamite comes in small packages!
If you’re going for gold this weekend and doing a little around the house/garden clean up, please bare the following in mind…
When ordering through www.bookabin.co.nz we are unable to guarantee any specific features of your skip bin. The reason for this is as we have a large number of suppliers nationwide covering almost ALL of New Zealand the bin types between suppliers will vary. Although we can assure you that the volume will always be that of which you have ordered!
At stage 3 of the bin booking process, you will need to request a bin size. To get an idea as to what the size the skip is in comparison to a person, simply scroll your cursor over the ‘VIEW’ text and take a sneak peak as to what size your bin will be. This is only guideline however, so do not be alarmed when your bin arrives and is slightly different…
If you do require certain cosmetic features to your skip bin, please contact your supplier directly and advise them of this. They are there to help!
Otherwise have a great week and GO GO GO NEW ZEALAND!

Hey Everyone!
Just checking to see if you’re all up to speed on how to properly dispose of hazardous waste (ie: fridges, asbestos, paint cans, mattresses, etc). Most bin hire suppliers do not allow such items. Don’t panic, there are plenty of ways to dispose of such items. Here are a few:
- Make a few extra dollars while getting on top of your waste management. There are plenty of vendors that are happy to take your fridge or microwave off your hands, simply check your local paper or go online
- TradeMe is another vendor where you can sell your goods and make a profit on at the same time
- Contact your local government authority
- Wait for Organic Day (be a tidy Kiwi)
However if you’re looking to get rid of any household waste, clean fill or general waste (see FAQ for more details) take a look at our website. Work all week but free during the weekends? NO PROBLEM! We can work something out to suit you!
So what are you waiting for the right supplier is only a click away!

Known for their windy weather, isn’t it nice for Wellingtonians to know that the rest of NZ’s inhabitants have been experiencing a bit of a “blow out”?
With the wild and crazy weather we are currently experiencing, some of us are in need of a skip bin to rid ourselves of the garden destruction that has occurred.
What type of skip bin hire would you choose? That depends on the waste type you have.
Loads of broken branches and extra leaves? Anything organic that has come to grief will go into a Green Waste Receptacle.
Old shed fallen down? A General Waste Bin is the way to go. Please note, this bin does have a weight limit 150kg per 1 cubic metre so maybe think twice about loading it up with all the loose roof tiles. A Cleanfill Bin has no weight limit and can be filled with concrete, bricks, clay, rocks, sand, rubble and dirt, so it would be your best option for heavy waste.
If you are searching from the Wellington area take a look at www.bookabin.co.nz. Especially for you this week we have local suppliers best rates in: Dalefield, Carterton, Kaori, Levin, Lower Hutt, Ohau Horowhenua, Otaki, Paekakariki, Papawai, Paraparaumu, Porirua, Pukerua Bay, Upper Hutt, Waikanae, Wainuiomata, and Wellington Central.

Thinking about booking a bin online? There is only one place to go to get the best quote for your area, www.bookabin.co.nz.
As you are probably looking at your pile of waste right now and wondering what sort of bin you will need, here are a few things to consider…
A General Waste Bin and Green Waste Bin have weight limits of 150kgs per cubic meter in size (i.e a 9 cubic metre skip bin can hold up to 1350kgs of waste). Suppliers are charged tip fees based on weight. The limit of 150kgs per cubic meter for these waste types is the average industry weight limit. If your bin exceeds this weight limit suppliers may charge you additional tipping fees. To give you an example of weight limits, 1 cubic meter of dirt weighs about 1.5 tonnes, exceeding the weight limit of a 9 cubic meter General Waste and Green Waste skip bin. (NOTE: There are no weight restrictions for Clean Fill skip bins.)
Skip bins should not be filled any higher than the top of its sides and should be filled in such a manner as to prevent spillage of material from the skip bin either while stationary or in transit. (Suppliers face prosecution for unsafe or overweight loads.) You cannot put any hazardous waste into the skip bins. To dispose of this you need to contact your local council. Hazardous chemicals include Solvents, Paints, Acids, Laboratory Waste, Oils, Grease traps etc.
You may still have a few unanswered questions , if so check out our FAQ page at www.bookabin.co.nz or feel free to LIVE CHAT with us from the website.

Just a quick reminder of what is considered hazardous waste as this may not always be the obvious. Most bin hire suppliers do not allow items such as asbestos but did you know what other items fall under hazardous waste?
Below are our findings:
Microwaves
Fridges
Paint Cans
Liquids of any kind
Tyres
Mattresses
Food Waste
Computer or TV screens
Compressed Gas Cylinders
Items that run off gas
Lights
Batteries
Treated Wood
Please keep this information in mind the next time you book a bin! Disposing of hazardous waste in your skip bin can not only come as a hefty fee to you, but it can also play its toll on the environment.
Have a great weekend!

Yay! The long weekend is on its way!
Why not make the most of the last long weekend until October by doing some basic household cleaning. It’s an ideal time to hire a skip bin and sort out the landscape in your garden out back, remodel the old kitchen, carpet the family room or even help the neighbours with their work.
If you have not booked a bin yet, why not beat the crowd and hire one online for next weekend?!
Just a heads up, make sure your driveway is wider than 2.5m as anything less may restrict the bin hire truck driver. Also please ensure you have a sufficient space at the top of your driveway to accommodate your skip bin. If you feel that the driver may require further instructions as to the placement of the skip bin, please contact him/her directly or add this information into your ‘comments’.
Have a great long weekend!!
